One of the most challenging aspects of being a language trainer in Finland is helping your student overcome the first and most daunting boundary in learning. Doubt. Finns, being a rather reserved people internationally, can have difficulties bringing themselves to expressing their thoughts… And in another language no less.

What can help the learning process?

In my many years of teaching, first and foremost is a relaxed learning environment. No matter how motivated and intelligent the student is, stress and high expectations are a sure-fire way to kill the joy of learning. There are numerous scholarly articles that highlight the importance of environment on learning, and for adult learning, it often falls on the teacher to create that beneficial environment.

The next key to learning is creating a clear reason for learning. Many students will feel frustrated somewhere along the line, and by creating a clear end goal and referring to it often, the trainer can help students recognize learning milestones along the way.

And finally, using creative and interesting teaching methodologies with your students.

The highly respected Finnish Education System is currently putting into practice its new Core Curriculum, which will introduce new methodologies to help prepare students for a future that is ever evolving and requiring innovative behaviour and thinking. If kids get to enjoy creative and innovative learning experiences, why not adults too? It can be hard to set aside the work tasks of the day and immerse oneself in the learning process, but if the learning process is engaging, and fun then wholehearted participation can be more readily expected.
